"Quality Training in a Quality Area"

The Cornwall Vocational Training Scheme is at the forefront of the South West Deanery’s development. The three Course Organisers share a great enthusiasm for our Scheme and work closely with the 35 trainers situated in 25 training practices across Cornwall. We have 11 SHOs based in hospitals across Cornwall, the main centre of activity is Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro. The half-day release course runs on a Wednesday afternoon and is both learner centred and Course Organiser driven, small group work is prominent.. Our VTS has had many innovations that have been taken up region wide. We have in the past led on our SHO away days, the 3 month visit system. At present have been involved in piloting the implementation of NHS GP Appraisal to all leaving Registrars. There is a smooth interface between Vocational Training Scheme and ongoing higher education work. All of this is happens because we work as a generic educationalist team.

Come and join us in Cornwall, have plenty of fun in the sun, but really learn the business of doing Primary Care properly!

Exeter Exeter is situated in the beautiful South West Peninsula. Our training practices are enthusiastic, many have several trainers and some take more than one registrar. There are inner city practices and rural practices in the towns / villages surrounding Exeter, some with their own community hospitals.

Registrars are given time to attend the GPVTS Half- Day Release Course in Exeter. This has a strong history of small group work, which compliments and supports learning within the General Practices.

Exeter has a high pass rate both at Summative Assessment and in the MRCGP Exam. Many graduates in the programme choose to stay or return to Exeter for the rest of their career in General Practice.

Plymouth Join us in Plymouth – a city and VTS built on the ‘Spirit of Discovery’. We have an annual intake of up to 7 SHOs on our three year scheme, with a similar number joining us for their final GPR year. The five GP Educationalists who run the Half Day Release (HDR) are supported by our excellent group of GP Trainers, representing a diverse selection of training practices.

The purpose of our HDR is part social/supportive, part educational. Learning in a group facilitates this and forms the first hour of our HDR day. Our excellent MRCGP/Summative Assessment pass rate, combined with easy access to beaches/water sports/ moors, and a vibrant city on the up, makes Plymouth a first choice.
