What do those who have completed or are currently training think?
A GP who has recently completed his training…looking back…
"Having completed my GPR training in May, I very fondly look
back at the few years I trained to be a GP. The breadth of experience
and the jobs I was allocated were exactly what I needed."
"The hospital jobs were fantastic and well supported under an
umbrella of the tiered structure that is followed in secondary care.
General Practice though is much more challenging as although as a
GPR there is excellent cover, the variety of patients and the
appearance of the unknown is probably the most challenging."
"Patients do trust their GP’s and maintaining that trust and doing
the best for both the patient and myself was what I most enjoyed."
"As a practicing GP today, the experience I have gained has laid
strong foundations for my career ahead. "
What current trainees think about General Practice…
"The programme has allowed me to develop skills in medicine;
communication and professionalism through various means, with teaching
provided regularly both formally and informally. "
"The GP scheme allows one to move from specialty to specialty. This
has the benefit of not only increasing knowledge but also becoming
extremely familiar with how the NHS functions"
"The most challenging aspect has been changing from speciality to
speciality. It may sound rather obvious within a GP scheme, as this is
how we as potential primary care physicians train. The difficulty
arises from becoming competent at one speciality and then having to
enter another new speciality with minimal knowledge. The reward,
(after a few months) is that this confidence then returns within a new
speciality. One then can reflect back and realise that ones knowledge
is increasing amongst a large breadth of medicine."
