ROUND 2

Remaining GP Specialty Training programmes

Round 2 applications for remaining GP training programmes to commence August 2009 can be submitted via the GP on-line system from Wednesday 15th April until midnight on Sunday 19th April 2009. Please read the following information before you submit a round 2 application.

Vacancies

It is expected that some deaneries will have remaining vacancies for GP specialty training programmes after conclusion of national clearing from round 1. At this stage we are unable to identity exactly where these vacancies will be but as an indication it would appear that the Scotland, Northern, East Midlands and West Midlands deaneries will almost certainly have remaining vacancies; London, and Northern Ireland deaneries will almost certainly not have any remaining vacancies.

Applicants for round 2 will therefore apply for any remaining vacancies and will not be asked to indicate their deanery preferences until later in the process when we will ask you to choose your preferences only from those deaneries with vacancies.

So that applicants can determine if they wish to apply for round 2 we have published a table of anticipated round 2 vacancies below and will continue to update this as more information becomes available.

Who can apply?

If you did not apply to GP in round 1, you can apply for any remaining vacancies in round 2 provided you meet the essential entry criteria. It is particularly important that you read the information given on the Entry Requirements page particularly with regard to the requirement for demonstrating evidence of achievement of foundation competency. You can attach your evidence of achievement of foundation competency to your application form or you can post it to the NRO to reach us by 9.00am 24th April 2009.

If you applied to GP in round 1 you can still apply for any remaining vacancies in round 2 but you must be aware of the following:

  • The GP system does not allow you to submit more than one application at a time; therefore you will be not be able to submit a new application. Instead, you should contact the NRO so that we can re-instate your current application and consider you for any remaining vacancies in round 2. Do not “fudge” the system by using a different e-mail address or altering any digits in your GMC number – to do so will render your round 2 application invalid.
  • The result of any assessment already undertaken in round 1 will be carried forward to round 2 and you will not be able to re-take these. This applies to both Stage 2 assessment and Stage 3 Selection Centre. If your application failed to progress in round 1 it is unlikely that a round 2 application will proceed. However, round 1 applicants who failed to demonstrate satisfactory evidence of achievement of foundation competency will be able to re-submit evidence to support their round 2 application.
  • All appointable round 1 candidates will be considered for any remaining vacancies through our local and national clearing processes before any offers are made in round 2. It is not necessary for any “reserve” round 1 candidates to re-apply in round 2.

Overseas applicants

As in round 1, we can only make offers to applicants whose immigration status would require an employer to apply for a work permit if there are no suitable remaining UK/EEA applicants. For round 2, we will consider your immigration status as at the closing date (19th April 2009). The NRO will contact any applicants who applied in round 1 who were not processed due to their immigration and right to work status in order to obtain more up to date information about their status as at the closing date for round 2.

Timetable

All key dates for round 2 are given in the Recruitment Calendar. You will need to make a note of these as we are unable to extend any deadline in any circumstances. You are strongly advised to check your e-mail and the tracker page of your electronic GP application on a daily basis as you will be expected to respond to any requests immediately. .

More information?

More information to help you with your application for a GP specialty training programme is available in our Applicants Guide and the How to Submit an Application Guide. These guides should be read in conjunction with the information for round 2 on this page and the updated information regarding dates for submission of evidence of foundation competency given on the Entry Requirements page.

A full description of our selection process is available on the GP assessment process pages together with examples of the assessments used.
