National Selection System for General Practice Training

Introduction | Presentation of the Research Evidence

PRESENTATION OF THE RESEARCH EVIDENCE

The diagram below presents some of the key research activities carried out within three areas: 1. Development of GP selection criteria; 2. Design and implementation of the selection process; and 3. Evaluation and validation of the selection process. Each research activity has a link to a summary page and the journal article** (pdf). A collection of conference paper abstracts are also presented along with a list of articles relevant to other specialties within medicine that have started to introduce similar selection procedures.

** Unless the evidence is taken from a Technical Report in which case only a summary is presented.

Research Evidence

The GP Selection Process

1: Development

The process started by conducting a thorough job analysis of the relevant knowledge, skills, abilities and attitudes associated with good performance in General Practice. The following section presents a summary of the research activities undertaken whilst developing the GP selection criteria:

Summary: Job analysis of GP role involving key stakeholders and expert consultation. Article (pdf)
Summary: Revalidation of the selection criteria for General Practice

2: Design, Pilot & Implement

Having completed the job analysis, this information was then used to inform which selection instruments and methods could be designed to evaluate the candidate’s capabilities against the relevant attributes. The following section presents a summary of the research activities undertaken whilst designing the selection methods for the GP selection process:

Summary: Design of a selection centre for general practice registrars. Article (pdf)
Summary: Exploring the impact of lay people involvement in GP selection. Article (pdf)
Summary: Developing a national clinical selection test for General Practice
Summary: Evaluating three short-listing methodologies for selection into postgraduate GP training. Article (pdf)

3: Evaluation & Validation

Finally, the process has been validated by assessing the extent to which the selection methods provide valid predictors of progress in training and/or job performance. The following section presents a summary of the research activities undertaken whilst evaluating the GP selection process:

Summary: Validation study to examine effectiveness of the GP selection system. Article (pdf)
Summary: Validation study to evaluate the GP selection system across three deaneries
Summary: Validation study to evaluate the GP selection system in the West Midlands deanery. Article (pdf)
Summary: Evaluating candidate reactions to selection process
