DEFENCE DEANERY (ARMED FORCES)
The Defence Postgraduate Medical Deanery was established as a
completely separate and stand-alone unit of the Defence Medical
Education & Training Agency in March 2002. The structure of the
deanery is inclusive and innovative, largely based on the National
Health Service (NHS) Deanery structure to ensure compatibility with
NHS. Its role, structure and vision/aspirations provide a sound basis
for a professional Defence Medical Service.
The deanery is
located close to the city centre of Birmingham at Birmingham Research
Park, adjacent to the University of Birmingham Campus. Its close
proximity to the university and to the West Midland Deanery enables it
to foster a sound relationship between the organisations, with mutual
benefits to all concerned. The site map is located at the

The Department of General Practice is lead by the Director of
Postgraduate General Practice Education (DPGPE) whose principal
responsibility within DPMD is the management of Vocational Training
for General Practice (GPVT). The DPGPE, who is also the Defence
Specialty Adviser in General Practice to the Surgeon General, is
assisted by 3 Deputy Directors each of whom is also the single Service
Adviser in General Practice within their respective Service.
The remainder of the team is made up of Associate Advisers and
Course Organizers across the single Services, each of whom has
specific responsibilities within GP postgraduate education.
